Introduction

The rules for calculating time spent in Canada are defined by IRCC to determine eligibility and rely on a reference period.

For citizenship, you must demonstrate at least 1095 days of physical presence within a 5-year period.

Only days within the last 5 years before the application are counted.

Each full day spent in Canada counts as one day.

Each day counts as a half day, up to a cap.

When switching from temporary to permanent status, the temporary period is converted (days/2), with a specific cap.

Days outside Canada are excluded, except for IRCC-recognized exceptions.

• PR over 5 years: 1825 days. • TR over 400 days: 200 effective days. • Apply conversion and subtract absences.
